Which companies have the best car insurance for delivery drivers?

Many major car insurance companies have begun offering delivery insurance and rideshare insurance that delivery drivers can use. Below is a list of companies that provide the best auto insurance for delivery drivers.

Progressive

Progressive provides rideshare insurance that covers food delivery drivers, drivers with passengers, and personal vehicle delivery drivers. It is excellent for people who drive for apps and are responsible for meeting DoorDash insurance requirements, Uber Eats insurance requirements, or requirements for other companies.

Other advantages of Progressive delivery insurance include add-on coverages, such as roadside assistance and deductible reimbursement. However, you can’t purchase a Progressive commercial policy without already having a personal policy. In addition, some policies can be expensive depending on your demographics and driving record.

While Progressive’s commercial car insurance is available in all 50 states, rideshare endorsements are only available in 34 states and Washington, D.C.

Allstate

Allstate has the best policies with customization options. If you already have a personal car insurance policy from Allstate, any add-on coverages that you have on your personal policy — such as accident forgiveness or rental reimbursement — will also apply to your commercial or rideshare coverage.

In addition, Allstate’s delivery insurance is available in most states and includes deductible GAP coverage. However, Allstate may not cover all types of delivery drivers, such as those who carry passengers. Furthermore, there is a lack of online information and no way to purchase the policy online, which is less convenient than other options.

Erie

Erie provides business use endorsements that delivery drivers and small business owners can add to their personal policy, which allows them to use their vehicle for any business purpose. The policies also come with various add-ons at no additional cost.

Erie is also a good choice for people who like to work with an in-person insurance agent. However, Erie is not available in every state. In addition, like Allstate, Erie’s business insurance lacks an online presence which could deter people who prefer to manage their policies online.

USAA

USAA is highly recommended for its excellent customer service, and it also provides delivery insurance in most states. In addition, it allows existing customers to add a rideshare endorsement to their policy online, which is more accessible than some other companies that don’t have online delivery options available.

However, USAA insurance is only available to active duty military members, retired military members, and family members.

However, when you’re driving for work or business purposes, you need to make sure that you have coverage specifically for the business use of your vehicle. It would help to discuss what types of insurance you need with your insurance company and your employer. For example, if you need DoorDash auto insurance, you should consult the DoorDash website — or driver assistance — to determine what coverage you need.

Some of the most common types of insurance for work and for business use of your vehicle include commercial car insurance, business-use endorsements, or rideshare endorsements. Commercial auto insurance is separate from your personal car insurance, while endorsements are added to your personal coverage.

How much does delivery insurance cost?

Delivery driver auto insurance rates will vary based on the type of coverage you select, where you live, and how often you drive for work.

The average commercial car insurance cost is approximately $1,704 per year for $1 million in coverage. However, you can add an endorsement to your policy for less. Unfortunately, endorsements may increase your car insurance rates by 15% to 20%.

Does personal car insurance cover delivery driving?

In most cases, personal car insurance will not cover work or business use of your personal vehicle. For example, if you are in an accident while delivering food, your personal auto insurance will likely deny any claims. In addition, if your personal car insurance company is unaware that you use your car for business purposes, they could decide to cancel your auto insurance policy.

When you become a delivery driver, the best thing to do is to contact your auto insurance company and inquire about the kinds of insurance you should obtain to ensure that you are covered.

Do employers provide car insurance for delivery drivers?

Depending on your employer, some companies and platforms provide car insurance for their drivers. Let’s examine the basic coverage details for some popular driving platforms:

  • Amazon – Amazon provides $1 million in liability insurance, $1 million in uninsured/underinsured (UM/UIM) insurance, $100,000 in survivor’s benefits, and $50,000 in collision and comprehensive coverage over your personal coverage limit.
  • DoorDash – DoorDash driver insurance includes $1 million in liability insurance after your personal insurance company pays out.
  • Uber Eats – Uber Eats provides $1 million in liability insurance, $100,000 per accident, and $25,000 in property damage.

Remember that these coverage limits could fluctuate based on your status during work hours. For example, you may not have any coverage from your employer or the platform you work through if you aren’t actively completing a job.

Small restaurants or companies hiring for personal car delivery jobs may also provide some insurance, but you will need to discuss it with your hiring manager. Even if your employer provides you with some insurance, you should still contact your personal insurance company to find out if you must purchase add-ons for business purposes.

How do I choose a delivery driver car insurance company?

It’s essential to understand how to compare car insurance companies properly in order to acquire the best coverage for your situation. Some of the most important factors to consider when selecting delivery insurance is price, coverage limits, coverage options, and availability.

One of the easiest ways to find the best delivery driver insurance is to compare multiple companies simultaneously. Enter your ZIP code into our free quote comparison tool below to find a company near you.
