How to Find Hummer Car Insurance
Finding Hummer insurance (also known as Humvee insurance) is relatively easy. Most insurance companies recognize the indestructibility of the brand, even though crash statistics are not currently available. However, finding cheap Hummer car insurance can be relatively hard.
Why? The Hummer is considered one of the 10 most dangerous vehicles currently on the road. In addition, an article from Forbes mentioned, in a brief examination of the records of Hummer drivers, that Hummer drivers had a tendency to collect more traffic citations.
This may be because of the high profile of the Hummer. Vehicles that attract scrutiny on the road often collect more attention from law enforcement than others do. The difficulty of seeing out of the Hummer, too, can lead to more small accidents.
Because of their heavy construction, Hummers do not appear to be vulnerable to accidents.
You can request a quote for multiple makes of the Hummer to find our how much Hummer H1 car insurance costs, how much Hummer H2 insurance costs, or how much Hummer H3 car insurance costs. Just go online as for any other vehicle. Remember, of course, that your age, driving record, credit rating, and marital status can affect insurance rates.
Suggested quotation limits are as follows:
Car Insurance Coverage | Suggested Policy Limits | Purpose |
---|---|---|
Bodily Injury Liability | $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident | Your responsibility, under law, for damage to others caused by you or a person you allow to drive your car. |
Property Damage Liability | $50,000 per accident | Your responsibility, under law, for damage to the property of others that you or a person driving your car causes. |
Uninsured Motorists Coverage | $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident bodily injury liability | Provides coverage for you or your passengers if involved in an accident with a person who does not have insurance. |
Comprehensive Coverage | $500 deductible per occurrence | Covers damage to your vehicle from theft, animals, vandalism, and weather. |
Collision Coverage | $500 deductible per occurrence | Covers damage to your vehicle from collisions |
With Hummers, it is tempting to skip comprehensive and collision coverage with a lack of concern about the vulnerability of the vehicle. However, most people need to finance the cost of purchasing a Hummer since the Hummer price, even now, is substantial.
Your lender will likely recommend the acquisition of this type of insurance to protect their interest in their collateral. With permission from the lender, you may wish to increase your deductible.

Hummer Car Insurance Costs
However, the big question is, “are Hummers expensive to insure?” In this event, our hypothetical insurance customer had a 2010 Hummer H3T, used for pleasure only, as well as a 2008 Honda Civic EX that is used for commuting to work. (Obviously, you wouldn’t want to use the Hummer to commute, however tempting it might be.)
Our hypothetical customer lives in Evergreen, Colorado and is a divorced attorney in the 40- to 50-year-old range. No prior tickets or accidents attach to the driver. Take a look at the rates below to see how much insurance is on a Hummer.
Average Hummer Car Insurance Rates | Per Month | Per Six Months | Per Year |
---|---|---|---|
Company #1 | $112.76 | $676.61 | $1,353.22 |
Company #2 | $145.00 | $870.00 | $1,751.00 |
As exampled by the two insurance quotes, the same coverage can vary by almost $400 annually and shows that insurance is high on a Hummer H3. Next year, however, depending upon changes in the insurance industry statistics and filings, the rates may differ again.
When renewing your insurance each year, do a check with the online companies to see if you can get a more advantageous pricing.
Don’t forget to check the financial status of your company with A.M. Best and examine comments regarding claims handling.
Hummer History
Hummer shoppers will be unable to find a Hummer made past 2010, and most wonder what happened to Hummer companies. The Hummer brand was AM General’s answer to those who had fallen in love with the M998 Humvee while in the military. AM General was owned by American Motors Corporation (AMC), and then General Motors purchased the corporation in 1998.
AMC continued to manufacture the vehicles, but General Motors handled the marketing and distribution of Hummers.
The brand was exported and sold throughout the world until 2009 when General Motors decided to sell the brand because of its bankruptcy announcement.
Why was the Hummer discontinued? Unfortunately, efforts to sell Hummer fell through, partially because of concerns about oil and gas shortages, and the Hummer went out of business. At present, there is still a lively market that exists for used Hummers.
The following types of Hummers were manufactured:
- H3 – essentially an oversized SUV with a wider footprint
- H3T – an off-road pickup
- H3X – a midsized SUV
- H3Alpha – with an extra-powerful 5.3L V8 engine
- H2 – specialized in the Panic Brake Assist and Electronic Stability Control System
- H2 SUT – a combination SUV and pickup, using E85 Ethanol Flex-Fuel capability with a more powerful 6.2L V8 SF1 Engine
Keep reading to learn about common problems with these types of Hummers.
Problems with the Hummers
One of the first things you should ask when shopping for a Hummer is, “are Hummers reliable?” The problems for Hummers are the same, whether its Hummer H2 problems or Hummer H3 problems.
Because of the size of the Hummer, they all cause difficulty with parking, driving, and fitting in a garage. Some concern also exists about their danger to smaller vehicles if a Hummer crashes with another vehicle.
Of course, the Hummer has very poor fuel economy, especially in its non-diesel configurations.
Some safety mechanisms do not exist for Hummers such as child safety locks and child seat tethers. Make sure you research Hummer safety ratings before you commit to buying a Hummer, as a lack of safety mechanisms could prove fatal in a crash.
Most drivers should also be aware of how much a Hummer weighs, as this can affect what roads a Hummer can go on. Because the Hummer has a curb weight of over 6,000 lbs., it is technically illegal on some of the streets in the US.

Reasons to Purchase a Hummer
For off-road work and play, a Hummer can be useful. They handle all types of terrain with little difficulty and power through weather conditions easily. This is useful in many wild areas of the United States and other countries.
These advantages, for some, outweigh the problems of the Hummer.
Consumer websites in the main do not recommend the Hummer for a number of reasons, mainly the poor average Hummer gas mileage. If you are looking for some of the most fuel-efficient cars broken down by category, you won’t find the Hummer on any fuel-efficiency lists.
In addition, as we get farther and farther away from the new manufacturing date, repairs and parts are going to be less available. A better choice might be to purchase some of the resulting upgrades of GMC products that are available with the best portions of the Hummer brand without many of the drawbacks.
Organizations and groups of Hummer enthusiasts still keep the brand alive. Many of these groups will help with maintenance and repair.
